Once upon a time
there was a place where all you tried just turned out right
Oh no! It was fiction, our convictions
like the reasons we were forced to understand

But oh Lord who’s gonna tell
when we climbed ‘board that train
that we’d find ourselves stranded on this same old bench
where we left behind misfortunes
and we fooled away the mobsters
and we promised not to come back here again

There was so much wasting ‘til nothing was left to spend
And we felt so much aching ‘til nothing could cause you pain
And there was so much making and so much breaking that now
There’s nothing left we can save

They’ll be back again and they’ll want you to rejoin their game
Oh no! It’s their mission, their ambition
Just to trap you when you start to hesitate

But oh Lord who’s gonna tell
when we climbed ‘board that train
that we’d find ourselves stranded on this same old bench
where we left behind misfortunes
and we fooled away the mobsters
and we promised not to come back here again

There was so much wasting ‘til nothing was left to spend
And we felt so much aching ‘til nothing could cause you pain
And there was so much making and so much breaking that now
There’s nothing left we can save
